A blocked drain is rarely an emergency in the first few minutes, but what you do then decides whether the problem is solved easily or gets worse. Below we explain what you can safely try yourself, what to avoid, and the signs that the blockage sits deeper in the network.
First: how many fixtures are blocked?
The most useful question is whether one fixture is affected or several. If only the kitchen sink or only the basin drains slowly, the blockage is almost always local, near the trap or the first length of pipe. If the toilet, the shower and the sink are all slow at once, or water rises from a floor drain when you flush, the problem is in the main sewer pipe or the manhole, and household fixes will not reach it.
What you can safely try
- Stop running water into the blocked fixture so the level does not rise or overflow.
- Clean the trap under the sink or basin: it unscrews by hand and often holds hair, grease or food scraps.
- Use a plunger, covering the basin overflow with a cloth so the pressure goes down the pipe.
- Pour hot (not boiling) water on a grease blockage in the kitchen; it helps soften the fat.
What to avoid
Strong chemical drain cleaners promise a quick fix, but in a full blockage they often sit in the pipe without reaching the obstruction. In older pipes they can damage materials and joints, and they make the job dangerous for whoever opens the pipe afterwards. Also avoid wires and improvised tools in pipes you cannot see: they can push the obstruction deeper or damage the inside of the pipe.
Do not pour boiling water into a toilet or PVC plastic pipes, and do not open manholes on a shared network without knowing what is underneath.
When you need professional unblocking
- More than one fixture is blocked at the same time.
- Water comes back up through a floor drain or the toilet.
- The blockage returns within a few weeks even though you cleared it.
- There is a smell from the yard manhole or the manhole overflows.
- You hear gurgling from drains when water runs elsewhere in the house.
In these cases the obstruction is usually in the main pipe: built-up grease, wet wipes, tree roots that entered through the joints, or a sagging section of pipe that traps debris.
How we deal with it
Unblocking is done with high-pressure water equipment that cleans the full bore of the pipe, not just a hole through the obstruction. When a blockage keeps coming back, we follow up with a colour camera inspection with a length counter: the camera shows whether the cause is roots, a broken pipe or a sag, and exactly where it is. If the pipe needs repair, it is usually done without excavation, from the existing manhole.
