Drain smells: 5 causes and how to fix them

A bad smell from the drains is one of the most common problems in homes and businesses, and it nearly always has a specific cause that can be found. The smell is sewer gas finding its way into the room. Below are the five causes we see most often, from the simplest to the most serious.

1. A dry trap

Every trap holds a little water that acts as a barrier to sewer gas. In a bathroom nobody uses, a floor drain or a holiday home left closed, the water evaporates and the gas passes freely. The fix is simple: run water for a few seconds at every fixture. If the smell goes, that was the cause.

2. A dirty trap or an early blockage

Grease, hair and scraps that stick to the trap and the first length of pipe rot and smell, even if water still drains normally. Cleaning the trap is usually enough. If the smell comes with slow drainage, it is an early sign of a blockage.

3. A ventilation problem

A drainage network needs venting, usually through a pipe that exits on the roof. If the vent is blocked, running water creates suction that pulls the water out of the traps, and gas gets into the house. The tell-tale sign is gurgling from the drains.

4. A badly sealed or full manhole

When the smell is stronger in the yard, the cause is often the manhole: a cover that does not seal, a manhole filled with silt, or a cesspool close to capacity. Cleaning the manhole with high-pressure equipment or emptying the cesspool solves it.

5. A broken or disconnected pipe

The most serious cause is a crack, a disconnected joint or roots that broke the pipe under the floor or the yard. Gas and sewage escape into the ground, often with damp patches, sinking tiles or repeated blockages. None of this is visible from outside.

How we find the cause without digging

Once the simple causes are ruled out, a pipe camera inspection gives the answer. The colour camera goes in through the existing manhole, and the length counter records how far along the crack or disconnection is. Nobody opens a floor blind. If the fault needs repair, it is usually done without excavation, from inside the pipe, leaving the road, yard and floor untouched.

Ma.Ster OE handles camera inspection, drain unblocking and no-dig pipe repair in Ptolemaida and across Western Macedonia. If the smell persists, call us to find the cause.
